Many Christians consider Muhammad a false prophet. What criteria does one use to determine a true prophet?

Inasmuch as the Bible has made mention of false prophets I am not aware of the litmus test it has provided to determine a false prophet. The Quran on the other hand has clearly stated the fate of a false prophet. Alexander Dowie (who claimed to be the return of Elijah) was a genuine case of what the Quran says about the fate of a false prophet. He was totally destroyed and died a cripple and a pauper with his own family members disowning him.

The Quran states the fate of a false prophet by saying:

69:46 ';And then surely We would have severed his life-artery';

A true prophet receives revelation from God whereby he is appointed Prophet of God. It is not a self-appointment. All prophets go through many kinds of trials so that their followers observing them understand that life is not always ';rosy'; and that ';trials'; are a part of the system of belief.

Prophets bring messages from God to the people and in addition to the many instructions God gave the Holy Prophet He revealed 6348 verses (the Quran) with 100%. Not a single verse can be challenged with any effectiveness.

The prophets are all helped by God and there are thousands of incidences demonstrating how God helped and supported Muhammad.

As a form of the nature of God, He told Muhammad that if he had any doubt in the revelation to check with those who had read the scriptures before (the Christian and Jews) and they would attest to God'd gift of the revelation he was receiving. (10:94) Of course this is a genuine support that revelation from God did reach Muhammad and that he did not make them up.

In religious world, a prophecy, quite distinct from an educated and wise guess, is considered the most authentic criterion and a vital proof for the truthfulness or otherwise of a prophet. As time and space does not permit me going to lengths on the truthfulness of Muhammad, let me just concentrate of a few of the prophecies given to Muhammad which are so clear that it cannot ever be challenges as false. A true man cannot bear false testimonies or dream of false prophecies (that would not have been fulfilled in time anyway)

';Some criteria are needed in order to distinguish cases of lucky guesses from those of true prophecy. Let us define a genuine prophecy as one that satisfies the following five criteria:

1.The prophecy must be clear, and it must contain sufficient detail to make its fulfillment by a wide variety of possible events unlikely.

2.The event that can fulfill the prophecy must be unusual or unique.

3.The prophecy must be known to have been made before the event that is supposed to be its fulfillment.

4.The event foretold must not be of the sort that could be the result of an educated guess.

5.The event that fulfills the prophecy cannot be staged.

According to these criteria, we see that the Quranic prophecies, some of which are presented here, prove to be quite genuine and true. Muhammad was unlettered (not schooled) so he could not have been able to manufacture them. They would not have passed the test of time.

Fulfilled Prophesies of the Quran:

FINGER PRINTS

';Their skins will bear witness against them as to what they have been doing'; (41:21)

The finger prints system at borders, criminal investigation cells and immigration centers prove the fulfillment of this Quranic prophecy.

POLLUTION

';Corruption has spread on land and sea because of what men’s hands have wrought'; (30:42)

One of the interpretations of the above verse of the Holy Quran is the environmental pollution, caused by human being. And that is spread both in land and sea due to our own inventions, i.e., fumes from chimneys of factories, chemical and nuclear waste, huge traffic in the cities, noise and creation of ozone hole are manifest testimonies of the fulfillment of this prophecy.

ESTABLISHMENT OF ISRAEL

And after him We said to the Children of Israel, 'Dwell Ye in the promised land; and when the time of the promise of the Latter Days come, We shall bring you together out of various people.'; (17:105)

Creation of Israel and gathering of Sephardic, Ashkenazi and the Jews of many other different races in Israel proves the authenticity of this prophecy and hence Quran.

GENETIC ENGINEERING

';They will alter Allah's creation.'; (4:120)

The holy Quran has prophesied the plastic surgery, genetic engineering and cloning in this short and concise sentence.

ROADS IN MOUNTAINS

';And when the mountains are made to move.'; (81:4)

Centuries before the invention of dynamite, the holy Quran prophesied the blowing up and moving of the mountains.

NEW TRANSPORT SYSTEMS

';And when the she-camels, ten months pregnant are abandoned.'; (81:5)

';And He has created horses and mules and asses that you may ride them, and as a source of beauty. And He will create what you do not yet know.'; (16:9)

As we know people, specially those living in deserts, have now abandoned camels and other animals for traveling. But this prophecy of invention and emergence of new transport systems is on-going as we witness new and faster modes of transportation emerging all the time.

ZOO

';And when the wild beasts are gathered together.'; (81:6)

Nobody could ever imagine that one day wild beasts shall be captured, tamed and put together in closed and open parks. The establishment of zoo have fulfilled this prophecy.

OCCEANS LINKED

';And when the rivers are made to flow into each other.'; (81:7)

';He has made the two bodies of water flow. They will one day meet. Between them there is a barrier; they cannot encroach one upon the other.'; (55:20,21)

';And He it is Who shall merge the two seas together. This palatable and sweet, that saltish and bitter. And between them He has (presently) placed a barrier and a massive partition.'; (25:54)

This phenomenal prophecy is an excellent proof of truthfulness of Quran. It was beyond imagination of any one living 1400 years ago to even think of linking of oceans which we see today in Panama and Suez canals.

MODERN COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS

';And when various people are brought together.'; (81:8)

Fast transport systems, telephone, satellite systems and internet have brought so close to each other proving the truthfulness of the holy Quran.

WOMEN’S RIGHTS

';And when the female-infant buried alive is questioned about – For what crime was she killed.'; (81-9,10)

Modern-day women rights and liberation associations may be brain-child of freedom-loving and egalitarian humanist / feminist people but foretold by Quran centuries ago.

BOOKS PUBLISHED AND SPREAD

';And when books are spread abroad.'; (81:11)

The invention of printing press and publication houses and consequently spread of books every where is one of the marvellous prophecies of the Quran made in the dark ages of ignorance and illiteracy.

EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL LIFE

';And among His signs is the creation of the heavens and the earth, and of whatever living creatures He has spread forth in both. And He has the power to gather them together whenever He pleases.'; (42:30)

Having discourse with aliens is still an unrealized dream, but science is progressing in that direction. The presence of extra-terrestrial life has been proved by scientists. The next step is to see them and making a link with them. No religious scripture, except Quran, even hints about this great scientific discovery.

AIR TRAFFIC SYSTEM

';And by the heaven full of tracks'; (51:8)

While prophesying about modern transport systems, Quran also foretold the air-traffic system which is an essential part of aviation.

AIDS

';It never happens that permissiveness overwhelms a people to the extent that they display their acts of sex shamelessly and they are not uniquely punished by God. Among them, invariably, pestilence is made to spread and such other diseases, the like of which have never been witnessed by their forefathers.'; (Ibn-e-Majah, Kitab-ul-Fitan)*Many Christians consider Muhammad a false prophet. What criteria does one use to determine a true prophet?
LOL...i know you put a low rating for my answer!

Ridiculous! Muhammad claimed to be a prophet of the God of Abraham...As such he is required to be in agreement with the word of God and the word of the prophets. A prophet can not be a prophet based on the requirements of his own book! You KNOW thats nonsense.

There is no proof Muhammad is a prophet. Also, th Bible says everything needs to be backed up by the Bible. Qur'an is NOT the Word of God. Muhammad taylor made the Qur'an for his own agenda over the period of about 25 years. He made his Allah to approve of everything he did, he even took his son's wife!!
One who claims to be a messenger of God is expected to live a saintly life. He must not be given to lust, he must not be a sexual pervert, and he must not be a rapist, a highway robber, a war criminal, a mass murderer or an assassin. One who claims to be a messenger of God must have a superior character. He must stand above the vices of the people of his time. Yet Muhammad’s life is that of a gangster godfather. He raided merchant caravans, looted innocent people, massacred entire male populations and enslaved the women and children. He raped the women captured in war after killing their husbands and told his followers that it is okay to have sex with their captives and their “right hand possessions” (Quran 33:50) He assassinated those who criticized him and executed them when he came to power and became de facto despot of Arabia. Muhammad was bereft of human compassion. He was an obsessed man with his dreams of grandiosity and could not forgive those who stood in his way. Muhammad was a narcissist like Hitler, Saddam or Stalin. He was astute and knew how to manipulate people, but his emotional intelligence was less evolved than that of a 6-year-old child. He simply could not feel the pain of others. He brutally massacred thousands of innocent people and pillaged their wealth. His ambitions were big and as a narcissist he honestly believed he is entitled to do as he pleased and commit all sorts of crimes and his evil deeds are justified.
If what he predicts comes true and it does not go against the inerrant word of God as given to us in the bible, then he would be a true prophet. If the prophet denies Jesus is the Christ, then he (the prophet) is a false prophet.

Muhammad denies Jesus is God, thus Muhammad is a false prophet.

1 John 4:1-3 Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world.

By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God,

and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you heard was coming and now is in the world already.
According to the Bible a true prophet must:

1. Predict some future event that comes true (Jesus predicted the siege of Jerusalem %26amp; the destruction of the temple that happened 40 years after he died).

2. Work miracles (Jesus walked on water, healed the sick, gave sight to the blind, raised the dead, etc.).

3. Cannot contradict another prophet of God, since God does not contradict himself.

Muhammad is considered to be a false prophet due to the fact that he fails all of the three tests; specifically he fails test number three because what Muhammad teaches contradicts what Jesus taught. If Jesus is a prophet who speaks for God, then when Muhammad contradicts the teachings of Jesus Muhammad contradicts God himself, and proves himself to be false.

Now many Muslims will claim that the Bible has been altered to make it appear that Muhammad contradicted Jesus, but the Qur'ran says that the word of Allah cannot be altered or changed. So if the Bible has been altered, then the Qur'an must be lying about Allah protecting his word from corruption.

--------------------------------------…

God instructs us in his Word to test the prophets and we find in scripture not only clear criteria for this testing but also reports of many true and many false prophets so that we have examples that help us in this evaluation.

To test whether a prophet is from God or a false prophet we have to look at both, his message and his life. Muslim theology itself acknowledges the importance of the lives of the prophets as an essential part of the criteria to evaluate the legitimacy of a prophetic claim so much so that it has created the doctrine of the sinlessness of the prophets which goes much further than the Biblical criteria.

There have been many people claiming prophethood both before and after Muhammad. Muslims easily reject the prophetic claims of Joseph Smith (founder of the Mormons, no relation to Islam), Baha'ullah (Bahais, acknowledging Muhammad as true, but moving on to further revelation) and the Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (Ahmadiyya, understanding himself to be a reformer of Islam, not with new revelation) based on the ';easy'; criterion that Muhammad said there will be no prophet after him.

Even though Muslims will certainly not be pleased by the material linked from this page, nor might they agree with us on the criteria for this test, we hopefully can agree that claims to prophethoood need to be tested whether the claimant's message truly comes from God or not, and this includes theclaims of Muhammad about himself and his message. We will provide references to Muslim sites and their view about Muhammad and why he is a true prophet. But in those presentations a number of issues are regularly left out. A true evaluation has to deal with all the facts and cannot be satisfied with a selective presentation.

These articles are not written to aggravate Muslims, even though this is probably the section on the ';Answering Islam'; site which will produce the strongest (emotional) reactions. Our sincere hope is that the material will help both Muslims and Christians come to a more realistic evaluation and view about Muhammad based on a fuller presentation of evidences from the sources. In that respect, I hope that even Muslims will find the material helpful for themselves to not be ignorant regarding parts of their history.

The first and most important of each evaluation of a claim to prophethood is the testing of the message. The testing of the prophet based on his life is secondary. Therefore we urge our readers to first study the section on the Evaluation of the Qur'an before proceeding with the below material.

A lot of biographical and background information on life and person of Muhammad can be found via the Index to Islam.

For Christians the most important issue is whether Muhammad is a legitimate / true prophet in the tradition of the Biblical revelation. In particular, the issue whether he is announced in the scriptures...
here it is:

Deuteronomy 13:1-5, ';If there arise among you a prophet, or a dreamer of dreams, and giveth thee a sign or a wonder, And the sign or the wonder come to pass, whereof he spake unto thee, saying, Let us go after other gods, which thou hast not known, and let us serve them; Thou shalt not hearken unto the words of that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams: for the LORD your God proveth you, to know whether ye love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul. Ye shall walk after the LORD your God, and fear him, and keep his commandments, and obey his voice, and ye shall serve him, and cleave unto him. And that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams, shall be put to death; because he hath spoken to turn you away from the LORD your God, which brought you out of the land of Egypt, and redeemed you out of the house of bondage, to thrust thee out of the way which the LORD thy God commanded thee to walk in. So shalt thou put the evil away from the midst of thee.';
First of all, there is no reason to even dignify the claim of Abu'l Kasim bin Abd'allah al Muttailib.

Why?

Since Jesus had prophesied that there would be many a ';False Prophet'; who would follow.

There are enough people above who are already giving you the reasons why Mohammad doesn't qualify; but, let me ask a simple question.

Isn't it the word - Hammad, the Comforter, that was used to make this claim?

Look at his real name - Abu'l Kasim Mohammad bin Abd'allah al Muttailib al Hashim al Quuraish. Mo hammad isn't even his first name! His first name is Abu'l Kasim.

Now, why do I say he's a False Prophet?

Well, look at what God did to him.

He took away all his sons born to his 12 wives and even the one born of the hands maid he dallied with who got pregnant and bore him a son. Not a single one of them lived to see a year after their birth.

Only his daughter - Fatima, wife of Ali bin Abu Talib, survived Mohammad and she died of miscarriage when the child bride of Mohammad hired assassins to kill her husband - Ali and they kicked her in the stomach. Ali, himself died when he was beheaded from behind when praying.

Before that, Mohammad had unjustly slaughtered all his own tribesmen and women - the bani al Quraish Jewish Tribe in the souk of Mecca and spared less than a handful of young women whom he sold to slavers!?

God, literally, wiped out the family name and even the Tribal name of Mohammad - al Muttailib and al Quraish.

Now, why would God give someone such a horrifying punishment?

Everyone knows that Mohammad died of the slow poison given to him by an unnamed Jewish lady who avenged herself of his having killed her husband and her family and then wronged her, too.

Ask yourself how and where did Mohammad die?

Every Muslim knows this.

Can there be anything more disgraceful and pathetic than that?

You can see that God had punished him for all his sins in the end.
Great Question!

See as Christians we believe that there is no need for another prophet to come after the Son of God! All we are waiting is for Christs second coming!

15';Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. 16By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? 17Likewise every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. 18A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. 19Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them. Matthew 15 :15-20

We believe in ALL prophets in the Old Testement! But not after the new testement! The End is almost here..and Christ is bringing his rewards with Him!

Another reason was because Jesus said:

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. John 14:6

So that was it ...he was the only way to heaven...there is no need for another prophet to come...after Jesus saying hes the ONLY way!

I mean all prophets of the old testement said the same thing! But When Mohammed came...he Totally twisted everything! And Twisted Gods Word! The Quran is really different from the bible! If we both worshiped the same God...The religion of Islam wouldnt be totally the opposite of the bible! And there wouldnt even be a religion after Jesus! All prophets talked about a saviour coming~~Oh and all of a sudden a prophet comes out of no where deleting and adding stuff to the word of God! Come on..you would actually take someone like that as a prophet of God? I dont think so!

With Love in Christ! ~~♥ † ♥~~
GREAT question. The word of God.

Was Muhammad a prophet of God and his Qu'ran the word of God?

According to the Qu'ran Muhammad is a prophet of God and meets with the angel Gabriel and receives revelation from him. The god Allah is supposed to be the God of Abraham.

Can any of this be true?

The God of Abraham has directed his people to test a spirit and a prophet of God to be sure they were not false prophets.

Did Muhammad test this spirit to be sure it was from God?

According to the Qu'ran Muhammad was instructed by Gabriel that if he had any doubts about this revelation he should speak with those who read previous scriptures.

This would surely mean that the scriptures from God agree with the Qu'ran at this time of Muhammad.

The Bible says they absolutely have to be in agreement with the word of God and the previous prophets of God.

Now let's see what Muhammad would have found had he had done as instructed both by God and by this unproved spirit.

Deut.13: 1 If there arise among you a prophet, or a dreamer of dreams, and giveth thee a sign or a wonder,

2 And the sign or the wonder come to pass, whereof he spake unto thee, saying, Let us go after other gods, which thou hast not known, and let us serve them;

3 Thou shalt not hearken unto the words of that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams: for the LORD your God proveth you, to know whether ye love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul.

A prophet of God must be in agreement with the words of the prophets and the known word of God.

1John 2: 22 Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son.

23 Whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father: [but] he that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father also.

24 Let that therefore abide in you, which ye have heard from the beginning. If that which ye have heard from the beginning shall remain in you, ye also shall continue in the Son, and in the Father.

1John 4:1 Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.

2 Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God:

3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.

4 Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.

5 They are of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth them.

6 We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.

7 Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.

8 He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.

9 In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.

10 Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.

11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another.

12 No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us.

13 Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit.

14 And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world.

15 Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God.

Anyone who claims to be a prophet of God must agree Jesus is the Christ the Son of God who is our Savior.

2 John 1:7 For many deceivers

are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist

Gal. 1:8 But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.

If an angel or a man preach a different gospel he is not of God.

God instructs his people to test a prophet or an angel to see if they are from God.

If we believed a man or spirit based only on thier revelation then anyone could be a prophet of God simply because the man made this claim. God is all knowing and foreknew that this is a problem and left us instructions that he proves his prophets. It is backward to ask a man to believe a man...we should first believe God then it is God who reveals the prophet not the prophet who reveals God.

God is not subject to a man but the prophet is subject to God.

If you think about it is nuts to think God allowed his word to become corrupt...then expects you to believe a man.

If the word of God is corrupt then any man claiming to be a prophet would be both suspect and followed...How would you KNOW? God is not insane he would foreknow of this problem...Without a trustworthy word of God be it written or verbal you can not have a prophet of God.

Without God no man could be proved by God.

So if the written word of God was corrupt God would have to give a verbal anouncement or we could have no prophets or anyone with a book is a prophet.

God is wiser than a man and solved the problem before there were false prophets and forewarned man of false prophets.

By the way even your Allah agrees with this obvious truth.

Q 10:94 Instructs Muhamamd if he has any doubts about the revelation he was receiving to check with those who read the previous scriptures...So even according to Muhamamd's own book he had to be in agreement with the previous scriptures.
For us Christians, Jesus is part of the Holy Trinity. Muhammed speaks against it. For Muslims, Jesus is merely a prophet. It is as simple as that.
Any prophet that says Christianity is wrong in any way and points people to another religion would generally be considered false.
According to Deuteronomy in the Bible, the prophecy of the Prophet must come true. If not, then they are a false Prophet.
You are no Muslim...are you?

Are you asking Christians on this forum to condemn their prophet and accept yours?

You are nutts.
he is not a prophet of God if he denies the Son.
Allah has sent prophets and messengers with many proofs throughout the ages for people to be able to clearly see with their own eyes and to be able to use their own senses the miracles and proofs pointing to the fact, Allah does in fact, exist.

Allah sent Jesus, the son of Mary (peace be upon him) with clear miracles for the people of his time. Speaking from the cradle while still a new born infant, creating birds from clay, curing the sick, giving sight to the blind and even bringing a dead man back to life, were all clear signs to the people to know Jesus (peace be upon him) was a messenger of Allah as was Moses before him.

Muhammad (peace be upon him) was the last and final messenger of Allah, and he was sent to all of mankind. Allah sent him with a number of miracles, not the least of which was the Quran. The predictions and prophecies of Muhammad (peace be upon him) have come true even in this century and the Quran has been used to convince even scientists of the existence of Allah.

[Please visit ';Science Proves Allah';: Watch video of famous scientists admit Quran is from Allah and even accept Islam]

The Quran is the best of proofs for the existence of Allah and today over one and half billion people memorize and recite from the exact text, in the exact same language it was revealed in; Arabic. More than 10 million Muslims have completely memorized the entire Quran from cover to cover, and can recite it from memory without looking at it.
Muhammad(SAW)'s other miracles were that he requested not to be called divine, but a Servant of Allah(SWT). Despite this, he was able to do things like multiply bread and water(i.e. water gushed from his fingers when he was on journies with his followers and they ran out of water).
One who is specific and accurate. So far there has not been one in all recorded history. Only ambiguous waffle bolox that can be applied to any era or circumstance.

Practicing Shaman... quantum physics rocks.
The only criteria is 'belief'. That goes for all religions, all members, and all prophets. Amen.
