How can you tell a false prophet from a true one?

Well a ';True Christian'; can be identified by the ability to drink a full glass of concentrated cyanide with no ill effects. How can you tell a false prophet from a true one?
Copperfield performed miracles?

I must have missed that special.

Or were you referring to David Copperfield of Blunderstone, who although good at shorthand, was neither a prophet nor a miracle-worker, but a nice, yet occasionally dense young man of the Victorian era?

The true ones almost never get good press. How can you tell a false prophet from a true one?
That's easy. From Islamic points of view, all prophet if you see, they announced the same word '; There is no God but Allah';. Adam (a) said that, Noah(a) said that, Abraham (a), Muses (a) Jesus(a) and Muhammad (s) said that too. They all talked about Same God. They all talked about paradise (Ferdous in Arabic). And all prophet approved other prophet. Like prophecy made by prophet Moses for the coming of ';a Prophet like me'; (Deut. 18:15) is about Jesus (a). And Jesus (a) said as mention in bible

';But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Paraclete shall not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.'; John 16:7

This verse clearly tells us that the coming of the Paraclete was subject to the departure of Jesus. And he was talking about Muhammad(s). If a false prophet come he will talk about totally different things. He will not approve the previous prophets.
1 John 4:1-6

1Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. 2This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, 3but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world.

4You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. 5They are from the world and therefore speak from the viewpoint of the world, and the world listens to them. 6We are from God, and whoever knows God listens to us; but whoever is not from God does not listen to us. This is how we recognize the Spirit of truth and the spirit of falsehood

False prophets always told the leaders what they wanted to hear rather than the truth. True prophets told the truth to the best of their ability reguardless of what those in control wanted to hear. That is why so many prophets were killed.
True prophets always lead to obedience to God's will.

Deut. 13:1-4

The prophecies of true prophets, when they are not conditional, always come to pass.

Jer. 28:8,9

To the law and to the testimony, if they speak not according to this, there is no light in them.

Isa. 8:19,20

When they disobey the law, God removes the vision.

Ezek. 7:26

True prophets place emphasis on the centrality of Jesus Christ.

1 Jn. 4:1-3

In vision, a true prophet does not breathe.

Dan. 10:17

The fruits of prophets' lives reveal their divine credentials.

Matt. 7:15-16

Believe His prophets so shall we prosper.

2 Chron. 20:20

God places true prophets in His church keeping His commandments to guide it through crises. Just as He sent John the Baptist to His people to prepare them for the first coming of Jesus, He promises that His last-day commandment-keeping church would be blessed by the Gift of Prophecy.

1 Cor. 12:27,28
Isaiah 8:20 To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.

Their teachings must be in harmony with the Bible to be a true prophet.
if a prophet prophesies and it comes to pass, that is a prophet of God

if he/she prophesies it and it doesn't come to pass, they are a false prophet.

A true prophet will never, never, never prophesy wrongly, never! False prophets give prophecies that do not always come true.
Well lets see Jim Baker was one , and Oral Roberts is another , Basically if they want you to send them all your money , Most on TV and lets not forget the Woman with Pink Hair and Looks Like a Clown ( Not Tami Faye) the other on TV
a true prophet will make vague statements so that they can later find some event that matches up to make it ';true';

a false prophet makes specific statements that are proven false
If they be livin' and breathin', they be false prophets.

True prophets don't exist any more than their ';god';.
Every prophet sent by God performed miracles.
