What's the difference between a real prophet and a false prophet?

A false prophet has no evidence to back up their claims of angelic visitations, golden plates etc, but then again, neither do the prophets that many believe are real. A false prophet could be said to be motivated by desire for profit, but then again, the same could be said for real prophets. A false prophet seems able to weave a spell with their words and convince gullible people not to question what they are being told, but then again, a real prophet can do and has done the same thing numerous times鈥鈥檓 confused, I hear many people claim the prophets of other religions are false, but how can they be so sure? What's the difference between a real prophet and a false prophet?
The Fundamental meaning of ('Prophet') is NOT that of prediction.

The English word `prophet' comes from the Greek `pro phe' tes.' `Pro phe' tes' literally means `a speaker out' [Gr. pro, `before' or `in front of,' and phe-mi, `to speak'], and thus describes a proclaimer, one who makes known messages attributed to a divine source. (Compare Titus 1:12.) Though the English word retains this same basic meaning, to many persons today it conveys only the restricted thought of a predicter of the future. But, as the foregoing information shows, the fundamental meaning of the word is not that of prediction.

the words of a true prophet will come to pass. a prophet is also there for encourgement.
You answered your own Q, There are rotten apples in every bushel. And scam artists as we well know can be any where to make $$$. The truth will set you free. I am content what I have works for me, Peace with in, in my beliefs.
A real prophet of God MUST be right every single time or he is afalse prophet. Jesus was God''s last Prophet.
Read the bible , In the O T false prophets were stoned to death when what they prophesied didn't come true . true prophets lived on .
Popularity is the only difference. There are lots of mundane ways to make it look like you pridicted something true: predict so many things that one is bound to be correct, predict something very likely to happen, make your prediction so vague that it can be interpreted in countless ways, predict something that already happened and then make it look like you said it before the fact, etc.
A real prophet is of God and his/her message is never meant for harm but to help people. A false prophet is not of God but self-motivated and only wishes to spread deceit and hurt to the world for evil purposes.
All prophets are true. The difference some people in believe in some of them and some people elieve in all of them. In reality all prophets were serving the same message with different details.
it depends on which spirit is revealing things to them .. either the Holy Spirit or some other spirit ...
This is unknown. There has never been a real one, so no comparison can be made.
The Profit of God is speaking for God. Or in other words loaning his vocal cords to God. The false profit is speaking and even sometimes using the word of God, but it is with his own understanding. Unfortuanitly there are many false profits trying to do something, instead of letting God do something out of them. It is a great disception by satan to convince someone that they are something special and that they should be heard. God is the only one that needs to be heard. The devil thought he had a better idea too. Guess what friends the dark World you see, is a results of satans words.
Read the bible and open your eyes and you will autuomatically see........
Accuracy!
In a general sense, in Christianity, a prophet speaks for God, Deut. 18:18; Deut. 18:20 (';speaks in the name of the Lord';), which would include prophecy.

In Deuteronomy 18:20, it is said that:

';When a prophet speaks in the name of the LORD, if the thing does not come about or come true, that is the thing which the LORD has not spoken. The prophet has spoken it presumptuously; you shall not be afraid of him.';

See Deut. 13:1-3. There are many other verses relating to true and false prophets that exemplify their roles, which go beyond foretelling events.

For example, Isaiah was a prophet, but his book contains more than prophecy. Luke 4:17. The Greek word translated as ';prophet'; (Strong's 4396) in 1 Corinthians 13:47 means ';inspired speaker.'; In turn, the Greek word translated as ';inspired'; (Strong's 2315) in 2 Timothy 3:16 means ';divinely breathed';, or ';given by God';, and the Bible states that all Scripture is inspired, id., only a part of which is prophetic.
I would think a real prophet would be one who's prophecies actually come true.

Course, you have to take their word for it till that happens.
by what they do. Christ said by their fruits ye shall know them. Just think how easy it would be for the world to believe the golden plated existed if they were on display to everyone? God is about faith. you receive no witness until after the trial of your faith. no Mormons are paid. the money in the church goes to build new churches and temples. as well as the church welfare system to help those in need. listen to the prophets of the church of Jesus Christ speak in general conference this weekend and judge for yourself. ask God. He is not the author of confusion. if you want to know where you can watch conference email me.
A true prophet will make prophecies that will and do come true.

A false prophet will make prophecies that will not and never come true.
its just good guess work, if i say there will be at least two more answers after mine on this thread and there are, well i'm a true profit, but if there are only one then i'm a false profit. its all a waste of time, no such thing a god, its just humans wanting something to be ';on the other side'; just a load of codswallop, when your dead, your dead, same as any other animal on this earth.
Nothing, it's only opinion. They can't be sure at all.
All real prophets were at one time false prophets although all false prophets haven't always gone on to become real prophets.
A true prophet is the one you believe in.

A false prophet is any other ';prophet';.

The same definition applies to true religions and false religions, true gods and false gods...
A real prophet prophesies things that are verifiable and come true. A false prophet prophesies things that do not come to pass or are proved to be fallacious.
They are proving by history that the prophecys in Daniel did come true. Even fortold the end of the nations and Jesus death. And some of the other prophets have had prophecys come true such as Isaiah. So if those came true then the ones that haven;'t happened yet will come true.
